Matt Fenton's interest in painting and drawing started at a young age, when he visited art museums in Baltimore and Washington DC. After a 35 year civil engineering career, he retired from his last engineering position as project manager for the Maryland Transit Administration and now is working full time as a fine artist. His art is inspired by the beauty of the visual environment, and draws on experiences from his engineering career, particularly the rail transit projects he has managed. His formal artistic education began in the 1970s at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Matt continued to study art and exhibit in Baltimore at School 33 for the Arts, the Mitchell School, Zoll Studio, and the Schuler School of Fine Art. About his need to create, Matt said, I want to share the beauty I see by creating it through my painting. Creating art is a spiritual experience to me. It can also be frustrating when I fight with the painting. He has had a life-long fascination with landscapes, particularly urban and railroad scenes, although he also paints still life and portraits. His oil, pastel and watercolor landscapes provide windows into life in urban Baltimore, the Chesapeake and Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Many of his paintings offer a nostalgic glimpse at the golden age of American trains. He favors a realist style with an emphasis on impressionistic brushwork. Matt recently moved to New York from Baltimore. He finds inspiration as he walks through the city every day.
